The War in Iraq

Alan is opposed to the War in Iraq. Although the Government's motives for going to war were in some ways honourable, the commitment of British troops to action seems to be against international law. And there are significant doubts over the claims made to Parliament about Weapons of Mass Destruction.

A tragic aspect of the situation is that a unique opportunity has been lost for united international action, including the consent of some states in the Arab and Muslim worlds, to rid the world of a vicious dictator. This would have helped to atone for the support given by Britain and the United States to Saddam Hussein in the past. The conflict must be resolved through genuine international action, but it is not easy to see how the Coalition can resolve the problems caused by the mistakes of the recent past.
