Social Segregation and Multiculturalism
Alan thinks that social segregation between different groups is a potentially worrying trend in Heaton, as in other parts of Bradford. Some people talk about 'middle class flight'. Others talk about 'white flight'. Some people say that segregation is imposed on groups from outside, by racist attitudes for example. Other people think it is 'self-segregation' by inward-looking groups. The process involves such issues as the choice of a place to live, or the choice of a school. Alan has suggested that we should move away from multiculturalism policies towards 'interculturalism', which involves a more active engagement between groups.

Do you think that some degree of segregation is inevitable, or even desirable?
-
Or do you agree that segregation is a worrying trend?
-
If you agree, what can be done to encourage greater integration?
-
How does this relate to freedom of choice for individuals and their families?
-
Is 'interculturalism' preferable to multiculturalism as a direction for policy?
-
Do we concentrate too much on ethnic and religious segregation, and ignore issues of income and social class?
-
What about segregation by gender, with girls and boys taught in different schools, for example?

Segregation is definitely a worrying trend, with self-generating segregation even where shared spaces exist, such as culturally mixed schools, where if you look at who is playing with who, you can see that the problem is not just solved by physically putting people together.

Segregation is taking place around the Heaton area on a massive scale. In the last ten years a large number of streets have seen 50% of the white households being replaced by Asian housholds. In some cases the changes have been far more marked with up to 95% of the white households being replaced by Asian households. |
