Economic Regeneration and Prestige Projects
Improved economic performance is one of the keys to a positive future for Bradford . A great deal of money has been earmarked already for a variety of different projects in economic regeneration and community development. Some people say that the money has been generally well spent, despite a few inevitable difficulties. Others feel that the funding has gone to short-term projects with no overall plan, so that there is no building on success for the longer term. Alan has raised the issue of prestige projects, with lots of publicity and promises for the future, but little achievement to show for it on the ground. Councillors have raised concerns about the proper use of funds in some projects.
Has the Council succeeded or failed in its policies for economic regeneration?
Has it achieved the right balance between paying for expertise from outside the District, and employing local people with knowledge of local needs and conditions?
Has it concentrated too much on creating new buildings in the city centre, and not enough on business opportunities in areas such as Heaton and Frizinghall?
Does the community need to become more involved in decisions about economic regeneration?
Do you share the concerns about the use of funds in some cases?

Bradford has had more external regeneration funding
than any other area in Britain - which says it all! |
