Education in Bradford

It is well known that educational achievement in Bradford is poor by national standards, confirmed by the Telegraph and Argus fact file. This is a tragedy for a great city that invented universal schooling over a century ago. Under-achievement is concentrated in particular groups, such as among young men of different cultural backgrounds. Many different factors are offered to explain this failure, including educational resources, language problems, individual attitudes and family issues. There have also been constant reorganisations of the school system, including the privatisation of Education Bradford, now run by the company Serco. Some people think that peer group pressures and the influence of the wider world also affect school performance.

•  Which of the factors mentioned above best explain educational under-achievement in your view?

•  Are divisions brought in from outside affecting performance in school?

•  Is there a hostile atmosphere among pupils and bullying in some schools?

•  How can levels of educational achievement be improved?

•  Should Serco's contract to run education in Bradford be terminated if possible, or do the major problems lie elsewhere?

•  How should education be run when Serco's contract expires?
