About Alan Carling

Alan Carling first came to the District in 1978 to take up a post as a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Bradford, and has lived and worked here ever since. He lived originally in Great Horton, very close to the University, and moved to Heaton in 1991. His two children attended state schools locally before going on to University. His partner has two grown up children also, and she works in the voluntary sector in Bradford.

Dr. Alan Carling holds a First Class degree in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, a Master's degree in Politics (with Distinction) from the University of Essex , and a Doctorate (PhD.) in Government from the same institution.

He has published many articles in academic books and journals, especially in the areas of social inequality and political philosophy in which he enjoys an international reputation. His own books include Social Division, Analysing Families (edited with Simon Duncan and Rosalind Edwards) and Globalization and Identity (edited, forthcoming).

Alan Carling served for many years as a member of the Senate and of the Council of the University. He was elected to these governing bodies by his professional colleagues. He has been an Officer of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) at the University continuously since 1982, serving two terms as President of the Local Association. The AUT is the main trade union for academic and related staff in the 'old' Universities, such as Bradford, representing professional staff at every level.

He retired from his full-time academic post as Senior Lecturer in Sociology in 2002. He is active as a free-lance academic research worker, and retains his link with the University as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow, and through his membership of the Programme for a Peaceful City. Alan is employed part-time to deal with personal casework for the AUT, both locally and nationally. This means that Alan helps with employment difficulties that arise for professional staff both in Bradford and in other Universities throughout the Midlands and the North of England.

Alan has been one of the two main presenters of the Round Table discussion programme of local news and current affairs on Bradford Community Broadcasting. He and his partner are loyal Bantam's fans at Valley Parade, and are members of Heaton Woods Trust.
